After knocking out Movsar Evloev in Round 2 at UFC 333 and successfully defending his featherweight gold, Alexander Volkanovski now has one final fight in mind, after which the 38-year-old says he will retire, win or lose.

During the UFC 333 post-fight presser, “The Great” once more showed interest in moving up and fighting 155-pound titleholder Justin Gaethje. He said:

“I don’t want to hold divisions up, but I believe we could do this and not hold the divisions up…Two 38-year-olds going at it and just leave it all. That’s something I’d retire for. If they want to give me that opportunity, win or lose, I’d retire.”

In another post-UFC 333 interview, Volkanovski said he wants to “keep going” and added he’s open to facing Jean Silva or the winner of Aljamain Sterling vs. Kevin Vallejos.

Dana White Likes Alexander Volkanovski’s Idea Of Moving Up To Challenge Justin Gaethje

Dana White has also seconded Alexander Volkanovski’s wish to move up to lightweight again, this time to challenge Justin Gaethje. At the UFC 333 presser, White, after being super impressed with Volk’s TKO win over Movsar Evloev, said:

“The guy’s an absolute stud… Volkanovski is incredible…. This guy’s f*cking built different. I think when you’ve accomplished what he’s [Volk’s] accomplished, there’s not much we’re gonna say no to with him.”

After winning the title at UFC Freedom 250, Gaethje is still recovering from a few injuries and has not yet decided whether he plans to retire or go again. However, “The Highlight” has clearly stated a few times that after 2 slugfests already in 2026, he will enter the octagon in 2027 only if he does not retire.

Gaethje has not yet reacted to Volkanovski’s comments/callouts.

It is also important to see what the UFC has in store for top 155-pound contender Arman Tsarukyan and whether the Armenian will once again have to wait for a title shot if the UFC picks the Aussie over him to challenge Gaethje next.
